Running a live data/analytics service

Running a data or analytics service for staff, residents and communities can be a daunting objective for cities to undertake. Join this new 2-day intensive class to help you understand the fundamental principles of building a data service with purpose and how to meet the ongoing needs of the city, your team and data community.

At the end of this class you’ll understand what it means to build a data service with purpose, how to identify a vision, goals and measures of success for a data service, understand how to approach user needs, and approaches to governance, management and continuous iteration of data/analytics services. You’ll demonstrate your own in-city approach and be able to learn from your peers in other cities.

Recommended Audience:

What types of roles/departments within the city?

  • CDO/Head of Data

  • Analysts

  • Developers

  • Open Data teams

  • Product teams/ service teams

  • Innovation teams with responsibility for data, etc.

What level of advancement in the criteria should they have achieved?

  • Wel want cities to have an example that they can use throughout the class, so they should have already developed (or be very close to developing, i.e. within 3-6 months) a data/analytics service. This can be an internally or externally facing service.

  • They should have the right infrastructure (ie: a data platform) leadership and expertise in place to be able to run these services.

  • What level of buy-in is required?

    • We recommend cities have the support of data leadership (and leaders across the city) to be able to decide, design and build data/analytics services

Participant Objectives and Expected Deliverables:

At the end of the intensive, participants will have:

  1. An high-level overview of what a Data Service Standard is (S12.1)

  2. A understanding of approaches to continuous improvement that they can use to define/refine their approach after (SI2.3)

  3. A understanding of the principles of good data/analytics services for internal/external users (eg building with purpose, being user-focused, governance approaches, managing/running live services)

Within a year, participants could:

  1. Also develop/refine their Data Service Standard (and we’d suggest they attend the January Sprint if completely new to the topic, or book an office hour for us to review their drafts) (S12.1)

  2. Reviewed their data/analytics services to define/refine their approach to continuous improvement (SI2.3)

This course will put you on the path to achieving the following WWC Criteria:

SI2: Your local government develops internal and resident-facing data-driven analytics services that utilize data from the city's data inventory to improve the lives and work of the community and the government.

Must meet 2 of 3

  • •SI2.1: Your local government uses the process outlined in the citywide data service standard to build and deliver internal or resident-facing analytics services.
  • •SI2.2: Your local government has at least one data-driven analytics service available for internal users and at least one data-driven service available to residents and external partners.
  • •SI2.3: Your local government continuously and systematically develops and iteratively improves high quality analytics services with demonstrated impact for residents or internal users.

This learning opportunity and more are available to staff in cities that have completed our online self-Assessment for What Works Cities Certification. The What Works Cities Certification program, launched in 2017 by Bloomberg Philanthropies and led by Results for America, is the first-of-its-kind standard of excellence for data-driven, well-managed local government. Open to cities in North and South America with a population of at least 30,000, What Works Cities Certification welcomes cities at all points in their data journey. Take the Assessment, join our Community and lead with data!
