Jumpstarting Your Performance Management Routine Sprint

Performance management meetings are a well established strategy in local government to produce improved outcomes. Many best practices are available to guide development of performance management efforts - however, there are also lots of moving parts to creating a program like this. Where to start? What are the important considerations? How can this program be integrated into your organization? This sprint will help to answer those questions, and ultimately lead you on the journey of outlining, planning, and scheduling your first performance management meeting. You will be guided by two former local government practitioners who have built performance management programs from scratch, and supported by peer cities who are on the same path.

Who should attend?

This sprint is designed for 2-3 member teams from cities in North, South, and Central America, who want to begin and/or maximize their performance management routine. Teams will collaborate on a series of exercises during each session. While it is preferred that multiple staff from a city participate in the sprint, individuals are welcome to register with the knowledge that some exercises will require feedback from other staff.

What will I learn/achieve during this 9-week sprint?

At the end of the Sprint, participants will have: 1) Evaluated the capacity, resources, and priorities of their city and senior leadership in order to create a workable performance management structure; 2) Learned how to manage data and analytics for performance management, including effective visualization strategies; 3) Considered the culture of change in their organization and learned how to orient performance management toward decision-making; 4) Practiced facilitating a data discussion in a mock performance management meeting; 5) Scheduled a performance management meeting on their priority topic.

Participants will be ready to: 1) Prepare analysis and content to support performance management meetings; 2) Facilitate and manage performance management meetings, including follow-up activities; 3) Work with other stakeholders to create a schedule of performance management meetings for the upcoming year.

This course will put you on the path to achieving the following WWC Criteria:
