What is a live data or analytics service?

Cities have always had a crucial role in making information available to citizens. Most data initiatives started with publishing open data for transparency, and over the years we have seen the need to mature into providing analytics and data services that help people to make data-informed decisions and solve real-world problems. Designing, developing and maintaining data services (such as APIs/CSVs for developers) and analytics services (such as maps for residents and elected officials) can be a daunting objective for cities to undertake!

This Sprint is designed to equip you with the fundamentals of building a data service with a clear purpose and how to meet the ongoing needs of your city, your team and your community. You can find out more about the importance and relevance of running a live data or analytics service by reading this Public Digital blog post.

What will I learn/achieve during this 8-week sprint?

At the end of this Sprint, you will understand why running a data service is an essential objective for city leaders and their teams to undertake. You will understand the rationale for and value of running a data service, as well as explore fundamental principles for building a data service with purpose and how to meet the ongoing needs of the city. You will have a vision for your analytics/data service, an understanding of how to approach user needs through service design, a map of stakeholders/collaborators/community, sample standards and guidance for your service and an approach to manage and continually iterate your services.

This course will put you on the path to achieving WWC criteria SI2 (Analytics Service Delivery)
