What is this course?

In this 11-week course, you and a team of participants from your city will design your own process evaluation. The course consists of:

  • Weekly instructor-led webinars (~1 hour per week)

  • Weekly assignments (~2 hours per week)

  • 1-on-1 coaching calls with a BIT advisor throughout the course

What is a process evaluation?

Process evaluations help answer questions about the implementation of a program or part of a program. You might have heard of things like a ‘pilot evaluation’ or an ‘implementation evaluation’-- these are usually process evaluations. Process evaluations can help you understand how the program works, what’s happening, and ways to improve it.

  • Is there a new or recently updated program your city is planning to run?

  • Is there a program with little evidence or high uncertainty around how it is implemented or received?

  • Is there a program in your city that needs to be improved?

Who should take this course?

  • Staff who are preparing to implement a new program or initiative in the second half of 2023

  • Staff who are looking to understand and improve an existing program

  • Staff interested in learning more about evaluation or are working toward What Works Cities certification

We recommend forming a project team of 2-5 people, including:

  • At least one person who works closely with the program you plan to evaluate

  • At least one person to manage and design the evaluation project

  • At least one person who knows what data exists and how to access it

What will I do in this course?

  • Identify 1+ process evaluation opportunities on a program of your choice

  • Complete an evaluation plan for your project, specifically:

    • Outline how and why the program is intended to work (theory of change)

    • Develop meaningful and actionable research questions

    • Create data collection tools, such as interview guides and survey questionnaires

    • Outline how you will use the results of the evaluation

  • Be prepared to implement the evaluation

I’m interested! What next?
