Implementing Data Strategy and Governance

Effective data governance is essential for organizations to treat data as a strategic asset. Join this sprint to help you build and implement a data governance team by defining a mission statement for data governance in your organization, identifying the appropriate data governance structure for your organization, identifying key stakeholders, and defining roles and responsibilities for your data governance effort. At the end of this sprint, you will have created a plan for collaborative data governance that meaningfully engages key stakeholders and identifies key focus areas.

Who should attend?

This sprint is designed to provide valuable information for government professionals interested and directly involved in establishing data governance practices within their departments or agencies, as well as leading city-wide data governance efforts.

What will I learn/achieve during this 5-week sprint?

At the end of the Sprint, participants will have:

  • Identify and design a structured data governance plan that operationalizes a vision for data initiatives, containing goals, strategies, and key activities (DM 1.1)

  • Document and define a governance charter that describes data routines, detailing objectives, participants, roles and responsibilities, as well as, action steps in order to plan, monitor, and enforce data management policies (DM 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3)

  • Identify and define the group of people that will manage data resources in the city and monitor the citywide data lifecycle (DM 1.2 and 1.3)

  • Identify or develop a standard to disaggregate data by relevant demographic standards, including race, gender, education, and socioeconomic variables (DM 1.3)

At the end of the Sprint, participants will be ready to:

  • Articulate the city's vision, objectives, and strategy around data initiatives, ensuring that vulnerable groups are addressed in policy analysis. (DM 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3)

  • Apply the framework in a citywide perspective, engaging priority areas. (DM 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3)

Within a year, participants could:

  • Establish data governance practices within their department or agency, as well as, potentially lead a city-wide data governance effort. (DM 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3)

This course will put you on the path to achieving the following WWC Criteria:
